KALAPANA PAINTED CHURCH

a close up of a flower

This gorgeous church in Kalapana was decommissioned many years ago after being moved from its sanctified grounds in the face of the approaching lava flows. The local community joined together to lift the church off of its foundation, load it onto a flatbed tractor trailer and haul it out of harms way up the road. Twice! The church remains open today to visitors thanks to a dedicated crew of volunteers, and we’re very proud to be able to help them pay for their restrooms, signage and anything else we can. If you’re in the Kalapana area, either with one of our tours or on your own, please make it a point to stop by the church and help the volunteers keep the doors open!
