Want to see it all in one day? This tour covers everything that makes Hawai'i Island unique. See Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, the two largest volcanoes of Hawai'i Island, on the way to famous Rainbow Falls and quaint Hilo-town, the site of two devastating tsunamis. Includes a brief stop at the KapohoKine Adventures store to top off on provisions before heading to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park where your trained park ranger guide will walk you through Thurston Lava Tube, past active steam vents, and into the Jaggar Museum. The return to Kona includes a stop at the beautiful Punaluʻu black sand beach where endangered sea turtles feed and rest. A picnic-style lunch is included.

Video and/or still cameras, government issued ID, and tour vouchers or method of payment

What to Expect

Moderate air temperatures at sea level with cooler temperatures at higher elevations on the drive from Kona; occasional rain showers; strenuous hike across uneven and steep, rocky terrain including black lava rock; red lava cannot be guaranteed on this tour.

What to Wear

Comfortable hiking clothes (shorts are ok), light jacket or sweater, sunglasses and hat, and sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes are required (sandals and flip-flops or “slippahs” will not be accepted)

What We Include

Umbrellas, walking sticks, mosquito repellant, sunblock, snacks and beverages (water, juice, soda) all day, picnic lunch, all entrance fees.


Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with lunch (may include Kilauea Iki, Thurston Lava Tube, Devastation Trail, Pu’u Pua’i Overlook, Pauahi Crater and East Rift Zone, Steam Bluffs, Kilauea Overlook, Hawaii Volcanoes Observatory, Jaggar Museum), Rainbow Falls, KapohoKine Adventures Store, return via Kau district and Punaluu black sand beach, order of itinerary may change, itinerary may be altered due to weather or volcanic activity and alternate locations may be substituted


Approximately 12 hours depending on pick up and drop off locations

  • Guests should be able to negotiate stairs and walk for 20 minutes unassisted
  • Volcanic emissions, including sulfur gas, may affect those with respiratory concerns
  • Participants should be prepared for immediate evacuation in accordance with directions given by County, State and/or Federal officials

All ages can be accommodated with the following restrictions:

  • State law requires child safety seats for all guests under 4 years of age (we’re happy to supply seats at no charge with advance notice)
  • Booster seats required for all guests between ages 4 and 7 and under 4 feet 9 inches tall and 80 pounds weight (we’re happy to supply seats at no charge with advance notice)

Guests under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by an adult.

Tours Occupancy Requirements

Please be advised that we do require a minimum number of participants on all of our excursions. Although your booking has been created, the tour can be canceled due to low participation. We will attempt to contact you and give advanced warning to any possible tour changes or cancellations. All tours canceled due to low participation are eligible for a full refund at the time of cancellation. In the event a tour must be canceled, we are happy to offer different times or dates that will confirm the excursion will take place.
